The World Health Organization (WHO) has welcomed the initial results of the use of "dexamethasone" in the treatment of the infection of the new virus "COVID-19", which it said has proven its ability to reduce the risk of death for people with the disease.

The organization said, in a statement issued on Tuesday evening, that it "welcomes the preliminary results of clinical tests conducted in the United Kingdom and show that dexamethasone, a type of corticosteroid, may save the lives of people with critical conditions of COVID-19".

The organization pointed out that the drug tests showed that "this treatment reduces the level of deaths among patients connected with artificial respirators by about one third, while the rate of decline in deaths among patients receiving only oxygen to five."

The organization pointed out, however, that the benefit from using this drug was monitored in people with critical conditions, and it was not recorded in patients in moderate or minor cases.

Commenting on this development, the Director-General of the World Health Organization said: "This is the first treatment that has been shown to reduce mortality among people with COVID-19 who need oxygen or artificial respirators."

He added: It is excellent news, and I congratulate the UK government, Oxford University and the many hospital and patient staff who have contributed to this scientific breakthrough that saves people's lives.

The British government said, on Tuesday, approval of the use of "dexamethasone" to treat people infected with the Coronavirus, saying it was "the first drug in the world that has been shown to reduce the risk of death from disease."

This was done after the University of Oxford announced the implementation of successful clinical tests for "dexamethasone", in the treatment of patients with new infection Corona virus "COVID-19", a cheap anti-inflammatory drug used for more than 60 years.

University scientists explained that the adoption of this drug to treat the disease reduces the risk of death among those who receive oxygen by 20%, and among patients connected to artificial respirators by 35%.

This drug was tried during the tests on 2104 people infected with the virus and they received 6 milligrams of "dexamethasone" daily over a period of 10 days.
